New Site
Sun Museum has been operating since May 15, 2015. Our mission is to promote Chinese and Hong Kong art, with a special focus on the works of local Hong Kong artists to the public. As a non-profit organisation and independently operated museum, we insist on being open to the public and organising exhibitions for free, which has not been an easy journey.
Looking back, since our opening, we have organised 59 different themed exhibitions including Chinese and Western paintings, printmaking, artifacts, ceramics, photography, and historical images. We have collaborated with 16 parties, in total 1,731 exhibition days with nearly 56,000 visitors. We have published 39 publications, organised 139 cultural lectures with nearly 10,000 attendances. We have recorded guided tour videos for 15 exhibitions, created visual tours for 5 exhibitions, and documented videos for 111 cultural lectures, all available for free on our website. We began building our art collection in 2015 and now we have acquired 216 artworks and a reference library with 20,000 books. We are grateful for your support and care that have accompanied us on this journey, allowing us to grow and thrive.
Today, as we approach our ninth year, to align with our long-term development, we will be relocating to a new location in the fourth quarter of this year, entering a new phase of growth. The new location will be at 1 Sai Yuen Lane, Sai Ying Pun, ground and first floor of the Artisan House, adjacent to the Artlane and the Sai Ying Pun MTR station.
The new location will span two floors, in total 6,000 square feet. The first floor will be the exhibition area, approximately 3,600 square feet in size, with a ceiling height of 15 feet, divided into two galleries. Compared to our previous location in Kwun Tong, the new space allows for a similar number of artworks to be displayed but can accommodate larger works, offering more versatility in display, and also serving as a venue for cultural lectures. The ground floor will house an office, a library, a cafe, and a gift shop. The new location, being a street-level space, offers convenient access and is surrounded by various dining options, making it more accessible for art enthusiasts.
The museum is temporarily closed to the public, but our team continues to work behind the scenes. The opening of the new location will be announced in due course. The relocation of the museum presents a new challenge for us. Through dedicated work, we are confident to fulfil our aim of transforming Sai Yuen Lane into a cultural landmark of the Western District, making it on par with Sun Museum. In celebration of the new opening, the museum is organising a special exhibition named “Hong Kong Paintings in Sai Yuen Lane”, inviting Hong Kong artists to submit their recent paintings for consideration. The exhibition aims to showcase exceptional pieces, which represent the latest styles and achievements of Hong Kong painters. The preparation work for the new site and the exhibition is progressing well, and we look forward to seeing everyone at Sai Yuen Lane in October this year.
