Hong Kong Emerging Artists Exhibition is an art programme sponsored by Simon Suen Foundation and co-organised by Jao Tsung-I Academy and Sun Museum. The aim is to provide a free platform for young Hong Kong artists to exhibit their works, which allows the public to recognise their art direction and achievements and helps them grow into elites of the art world. By encouraging young artists to revitalise the spirit of Chinese art and unleash their creativity, the philosophy of reviving Chinese culture from Jao Tsung-i, Master of Chinese Studies, is inherited through the programme. With the unique works of the young artists, the public can experience the greatness of Chinese culture, thereby adding a new chapter to the promotion of the visual arts in Hong Kong.

The Phase II exhibition features 39 pieces of artworks from five selected young artists, showcasing their aspiration and achievement through different mediums.

The selected artists are listed below:
- CHAU Sau Lan
- CHAN Chi Man
- CHAN Hei Nam, Raina
- LIU Xin, Lucy
- Rainbow TSE (RAINB.W)

Foreword

Following a successful debut, we are delighted to welcome you to the second exhibition of the “Hong Kong Emerging Artists” series, featuring five artists from diverse backgrounds, with works ranging from paintings to ceramics.

Chau Sau Lan presents portraits inspired in part by genre painting, vividly capturing the daily lives of Hong Kong residents. Her characters, whether strolling along the waterfront or chatting at market stalls, evoke a sense of familiarity, like neighbours we know well. Her other collection of mini-portraits depict iconic characters from beloved Hong Kong TV dramas. With lively expressions, these portraits evoke a sense of nostalgia and joy in viewers.

Chan Chi Man’s series of cylindrical ceramics employ the 3D form to create optical illusions. By painting on the top and sides of the cylinders, he creates dynamic visual effects that shift with the viewer's perspectives. We encourage visitors to view his works from multiple angles to fully appreciate the intricate effects.

Chan Hei Nam, Raina, an outdoor sketching enthusiast, uses soft watercolour tones to record her travel memories in Tibet, depicting people and animals at ease in vast landscapes. Her art radiates tranquillity, embodying her belief that nature is her greatest teacher – a sentiment likely to resonate with viewers who reverence for the natural world.

Liu Xin, Lucy, who has loved art since childhood but has no formal academic training, consistently pursued her passion. She draws inspiration from surroundings, using watercolour to capture scenery and the beauty of everyday objects. Her works have a serene, understated quality that invites close appreciation and reflection.

Also working in watercolour, Rainbow Tse chooses Hong Kong's street scenes and nightscapes as her subject. Utilising the fluid qualities of watercolours, she creates multiple layers in her works, resulting in an effect that is both realistic and surreal. In her paintings, the cityscapes appear as if viewed through a rain-splattered window, thereby lending a mysterious aura to familiar urban settings.

For the five artists, their work is a reflection of a life fully lived. Some have honed their skills in academic settings, while others are self-taught, progressing through perseverance. We are proud to champion these artists and look forward to supporting more emerging talents as they embark on their artistic journeys.
